			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<div class='snap_preview'><br /><p><font color="#000000">Dr. Richardson, in his lectures on alcohol, given both in England and America, speaking of the action of this substance on the blood after passing from the stomach, says: </font><font color="#000000">&#8220;Suppose, then, a certain measure of alcohol be taken into the stomach, it will be absorbed there, but, previous to absorption, it will have to undergo a proper degree of dilution with water, for there is this peculiarity respecting alcohol when it is separated by an animal membrane from a watery fluid like the blood, that it will not pass through the membrane until it has become charged, to a given point of dilution, with water. It is itself, in fact, so greedy for water, it will pick it up from watery textures, and deprive them of it until, by its saturation, its power of reception is exhausted , after which it will diffuse into the current of circulating fluid.&#8221; </font></p>
<p><font color="#000000">It is this power of absorbing water from every texture with which alcoholic spirits comes in contact, that creates the burning thirst of those who freely indulge in its use. Its effect, when it reaches the circulation, is thus described by Dr. Richardson: </font></p>
<p><font color="#000000">&#8220;As it passes through the circulation of the lungs it is exposed to the air, and some little of it, raised into vapor by the natural heat, is thrown off in expiration. If the quantity of it be large, this loss may be considerable, and the odor of the spirit may be detected in the expired breath. If the quantity be small, the loss will be comparatively little, as the spirit will be held in solution by the water in the blood. After it has passed through the lungs, and has been driven by the left heart over the arterial circuit, it passes into what is called the minute circulation, or the structural circulation of the organism. The arteries here extend into very small vessels, which are called arterioles, and from these infinitely small vessels spring the equally minute radicals or roots of the veins, which are ultimately to become the great rivers bearing the blood back to the heart. In its passage through this minute circulation the alcohol finds its way to every organ. </font><br />
<font color="#000000">To this brain, to these muscles, to these secreting or excreting organs, nay, even into this bony structure itself, it moves with the blood. In some of these parts which are not excreting, it remains for a time diffused, and in those parts where there is a large percentage of water, it remains longer than in other parts. From some organs which have an open tube for conveying fluids away, as the liver and kidneys, it is thrown out or eliminated, and in this way a portion of it is ultimately removed from the body. The rest passing round and round with the circulation, is probably decomposed and carried off in new forms of matter. </font></p>
<p><font color="#000000">&#8220;When we know the course which the alcohol takes in its passage through the body, from the period of its absorption to that of its elimination, we are the better able to judge what physical changes it induces in the different organs and structures with which it comes in contact. It first reaches the blood; but, as a rule, the quantity of it that enters is insufficient to produce any material effect on that fluid. If, however, the dose taken be poisonous or semi-poisonous, then even the blood, rich as it is in water and it contains seven hundred and ninety parts in a thousand is affected. </font><br />
<font color="#000000">The alcohol is diffused through this water, and there it comes in contact with the other constituent parts, with the fibrine, that plastic substance which, when blood is drawn, clots and coagulates, and which is present in the proportion of from two to three parts in a thousand; with the albumen which exists in the proportion of seventy parts; with the salts which yield about ten parts; with the fatty matters; and lastly, with those minute, round bodies which float in myriads in the blood (which were discovered by the Dutch philosopher, Leuwenhock, as one of the first results of microscopical observation, about the middle of the seventeenth century), and which are called the blood globules or corpuscles. </font></p>
<p><font color="#000000">These last-named bodies are, in fact, cells; their discs, when natural, have a smooth outline, they are depressed in the centre, and they are red in color; the color of the blood being derived from them. We have discovered that there exist other corpuscles or cells in the blood in much smaller quantity, which are called white cells, and these different cells float in the blood-stream within the vessels. The red take the centre of the stream; the white lie externally near the sides of the vessels, moving less quickly. Our business is mainly with the red corpuscles. </font></p>
<p><font color="#000000">They perform the most important functions in the economy; they absorb, in great part, the oxygen which we inhale in breathing, and carry it to the extreme tissues of the body; they absorb, in great part, the carbonic acid gas which is produced in the combustion of the body in the extreme tissues, and bring that gas back to the lungs to be exchanged for oxygen there; in short, they are the vital instruments of the circulation. </font></p>
<p><font color="#000000">&#8220;With all these parts of the blood, with the water, fibrine, albumen, salts, fatty matter and corpuscles, the alcohol comes in contact when it enters the blood, and, if it be in sufficient quantity, it produces disturbing action. I have watched this disturbance very carefully on the blood corpuscles; for, in some animals we can see these floating along during life, and we can also observe them from men who are under the effects of alcohol, by removing a speck of blood, and examining it with the microscope. The action of the alcohol, when it is observable, is varied. </font></p>
<p><font color="#000000">It may cause the corpuscles to run too closely together, and to adhere in rolls; it may modify their outline, making the clear-defined, smooth, outer edge irregular or crenate, or even starlike; it may change the round corpuscle into the oval form, or, in very extreme cases, it may produce what I may call a truncated form of corpuscles, in which the change is so great that if we did not trace it through all its stages, we should be puzzled to know whether the object looked at were indeed a blood-cell. All these changes are due to the action of the spirit upon the water contained in the corpuscles; upon the capacity of the spirit to extract water from them. </font></p>
<p><font color="#000000">During every stage of modification of corpuscles thus described, their function to absorb and fix gases is impaired, and when the aggregation of the cells, in masses, is great, other difficulties arise, for the cells, united together, pass less easily than they should through the minute vessels of the lungs and of the general circulation, and impede the current, by which local injury is produced. </font></p>
<p><font color="#000000">&#8220;A further action upon the blood, instituted by alcohol in excess, is upon the fibrine or the plastic colloidal matter. On this the spirit may act in two different ways, according to the degree in which it affects the water that holds the fibrine in solution. It may fix the water with the fibrine, and thus destroy the power of coagulation; or it may extract the water so determinately as to produce coagulation.&#8221; </font></p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<div class='snap_preview'><br /><p>Male infants in developed nations are more likely to die than female infants, a fact that is partially responsible for men&#8217;s shorter lifespans, reveals a new study by researchers from University of Pennsylvania and University of Southern California.The paper, which will be published online in the Monday, March 24 edition of the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, analyzes 15 countries spanning three continents and hundreds of years. It finds that the gender gap in infant mortality was as high as 30 percent at its peak around 1970.</p>
<p>The disparity has narrowed in recent decades due to medical advancements that have helped more baby boys survive, specifically, caesarean sections and the spread of intensive care units for premature babies, the study found.</p>
<p>&#8220;The marked reversal of historical trends indicates that at an age when males and females experience very similar lives, they are very different in their biological vulnerability, but how different depends on environmental and medical conditions,&#8221; said corresponding author Eileen Crimmins, associate dean and professor at the USC Davis School of Gerontology.</p>
<p>In the 20th century the leading causes of infant death shifted from infectious diseases such as diarrheal diseases to congenital conditions and complications of childbirth and premature delivery, according to the study.</p>
<p>Boys are 60 percent more likely to be premature and to suffer from conditions arising from being born premature, such as respiratory distress syndrome. They are also at a higher risk of birth injury and mortality due to their larger body and head size.</p>
<p>The spread of intensive care units for infants has especially favored the survival of small and premature baby boys, the research found, because boys were more vulnerable across a range of weights. Since 1970, the percentage of deliveries by c-section has grown from an average of 5 percent to more than 20 percent. C-sections are also 20 percent more common for males.</p>
<p>The 15 countries analyzed include Sweden, France, Denmark, England/Wales, Norway, The Netherlands, Italy, Switzerland, Finland, the United States, Spain, Australia, Canada, Belgium and Japan.</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<div class='snap_preview'><br /><p>Individuals who experience military combat obviously endure extreme stress, and this exposure leaves many diagnosed with the psychiatric condition of post-traumatic stress disorder, or PTSD. PTSD is associated with several abnormalities in brain structure and function.However, as researcher Roger Pitman explains, &#8220;Although it is tempting to conclude that these abnormalities were caused by the traumatic event, it is also possible that they were pre-existing risk factors that increased the risk of developing PTSD upon the traumatic event&#8217;s occurrence.&#8221; Drs. Kasai and Yamasue along with their colleagues sought to examine this association in a new study published in the March 15th issue of Biological Psychiatry.</p>
<p>The authors measured the gray matter density of the brains of combat-exposed Vietnam veterans, some with and some without PTSD, and their combat-unexposed identical twins using a technology called magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). The detailed images provided by the MRI scans then allowed the investigators to compare specific brain regions of the siblings.</p>
<p>They found that the gray matter density of the pregenual anterior cingulate cortex, an area of the brain involved in emotional functioning, was reduced in veterans with PTSD, but not in their twins who had not experienced combat. According to Dr. Pitman, &#8220;this finding supports the conclusion that the psychological stress resulting from the traumatic stressor may damage this brain region, with deleterious emotional consequences.&#8221;</p>
<p>John H. Krystal, M.D., Editor of Biological Psychiatry and affiliated with both Yale University School of Medicine and the VA Connecticut Healthcare System, discusses the need for this kind of research because of two separate sets of prior findings: &#8220;On the one hand, compelling data from animal research indicates that stress can cause brain atrophy and even neural death in some brain regions.</p>
<p>On the other hand, the volume of several brain regions are highly heritable and small brain volumes, presumably related to reduced function, in the hippocampus may increase stress reactivity or impair the capacity for resilience.&#8221; He adds that findings from this study &#8220;suggest that volume reductions in [the anterior cingulate cortex] associated with PTSD arise as a consequence of stress exposure rather than emerging as a heritable trait,&#8221; leaving one to conclude that &#8220;the extent to which particular genes and environmental exposures interact to shape the development of the brain thus appears to be complex and region-specific.&#8221;</p>

<p align="justify"><font color="#000000">How many times have you gone to sleep at night, swearing you&#8217;ll go to the gym in the morning, and then changing your mind just eight hours later because when you get up, you don&#8217;t feel like exercising? </font></p>
<p align="justify"><font color="#000000">While this can happen to the best of us, it doesn&#8217;t mean you should drop the ball altogether when it comes to staying fit. What people need to realize is that staying active and eating right are critical for long-term health and wellness &#8212; and that an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure. The more you know about how your body responds to your lifestyle choices, the better you can customize a nutrition and exercise plan that is right for you. When you eat well, increase your level of physical activity, and exercise at the proper intensity, you are informing your body that you want to burn a substantial amount of fuel. This translates to burning fat more efficiently for energy.<br />
In other words, proper eating habits plus exercise equals fast metabolism, which, in turn gives you more energy throughout the day and allows you to do more physical work with less effort. </font></p>
<p align="justify"><font color="#000000">The true purpose of exercise is to send a repetitive message to the body asking for improvement in metabolism, strength, aerobic capacity and overall fitness and health. Each time you exercise, your body responds by upgrading its capabilities to burn fat throughout the day and night, Exercise doesn&#8217;t have to be intense to work for you, but it does need to be consistent. </font></p>
<p align="justify"><font color="#000000">I recommend engaging in regular cardiovascular exercise four times per week for 20 to 30 minutes per session, and resistance training four times per week for 20 to 25 minutes per session. This balanced approach provides a one-two punch, incorporating aerobic exercise to burn fat and deliver more oxygen, and resistance training to increase lean body mass and burn more calories around the block.</font></p>
<p align="justify"><font color="#000000">Here&#8217;s a sample exercise program that may work for you: </font></p>
<p align="justify"><font color="#000000">* <font color="#0000ff"><i>Warm Up</i></font> &#8212; seven to eight minutes of light aerobic activity intended to increase blood flow and lubricate and warm-up your tendons and joints. </font></p>
<p align="justify"><font color="#000000">* <font color="#0000ff"><i>Resistance Training</i></font> &#8212; Train all major muscle groups. One to two sets of each exercise. Rest 45 seconds between sets. </font></p>
<p align="justify"><font color="#000000">* <font color="#0000ff"><i>Aerobic Exercise </i></font>&#8211; Pick two favorite activities, they could be jogging, rowing, biking or cross-country skiing, whatever fits your lifestyle. Perform 12 to 15 minutes of the first activity and continue with 10 minutes of the second activity. Cool down during the last five minutes. </font></p>

<p align="justify"><font color="#000000">When starting an exercise program, it is important to have realistic expectations. Depending on your initial fitness level, you should expect the following changes early on. </font></p>
<p align="justify"><font color="#000000">* <i><font color="#0000ff">From one to eight weeks</font></i> &#8212; Feel better and have more energy.</font></p>
<p align="justify"><font color="#000000">* <i><font color="#0000ff">From two to six months</font></i> &#8212; Lose size and inches while becoming leaner. Clothes begin to fit more loosely. You are gaining muscle and losing fat. </font></p>
<p align="justify"><font color="#000000">* <i><font color="#0000ff">After six months</font></i> &#8212; Start losing weight quite rapidly. </font></p>
<p align="justify"><font color="#000000">Once you make the commitment to exercise several times a week, don&#8217;t stop there. You should also change your diet and/or eating habits,&#8217; says Zwiefel. Counting calories or calculating grams and percentages for certain nutrients is impractical. Instead, I suggest these easy-to-follow guidelines: </font></p>
<p align="justify"><font color="#000000">* <i><font color="#0000ff">Eat several small meals</font></i> (optimally four) and a couple of small snacks throughout the day </font></p>
<p align="justify"><font color="#000000"><br />
* <i><font color="#0000ff">Make sure every meal is balance</font><font color="#0000ff">d</font></i> &#8212; incorporate palm-sized proteins like lean meats, fish, egg whites and dairy products, fist-sized portions of complex carbohydrates like whole-wheat bread and pasta, wild rice, multigrain cereal and potatoes, and fist-sized portions of vegetable and fruits </font></p>
<p align="justify"><font color="#000000"><br />
* <i><font color="#0000ff">Limit your fat intake to only what&#8217;s necessary for adequate flavor</font></i> </font></p>
<p align="justify"><font color="#000000"><br />
* <i><font color="#0000ff">Drink at least eight 8-oz. glasses of water throughout the day</font></i> </font></p>
<p align="justify"><font color="#000000"><br />
* <i><font color="#0000ff">I also recommend that you take a multi-vitamin</font></i> each day to ensure you are getting all the vitamins and minerals your body needs.</font></p>
